About: Recently catapulted to the international stage, Madalisto Band comes from humble origins. Yobu Maligwa (vocals, babatone) and Yosefe Kalekeni (four-string guitar, foot drum) spent years playing their upbeat, traditional folk music on the streets of the Malawian capital, Lilongwe. When given the opportunity to perform at the annual African music festival Sauti zaBusara in Zanzibar, Tanzania, the duo took European audiences by storm with their down-to-earth nature and raw on-stage energy.
Outfitted with homemade instruments, Madalitso combines ruthless rhythms and lush harmonies to produce an effortless, authentic sound. Taking inspiration from Malawian jazz, the duo’s infectious and energetic songs tell stories of redemption—from the homeless, orphan girl who goes on to lead a successful life to the abused wife who finally works up the courage to leave her husband.
Come ready to clap, dance, and smile the night away with Yobu and Yosefe of the Madalitso Band!
