About: Irina Muresanu is an acclaimed Romanian-born violinist known for her dynamic solo performances and innovative programming. A laureate of prestigious international competitions, she has performed worldwide, earning recognition as a recording artist and a champion of contemporary music. Her adventurous programming and thematic concepts define her solo career.
Her celebrated multimedia project, “Four Strings Around the World”, explores global musical traditions through solo violin works spanning five continents (details below). The program, recorded on the Grammy-nominated Sono Luminus label, continues to evolve with new commissions from composers around the world.
Muresanu is a Fulbright U.S. Scholar and a professor at the University of Maryland, where she leads groundbreaking research on music and technology. She performs on a Giuseppe Rocca violin (1849) and an Étienne Pajeot bow.
About the Program: With “Four Strings Around the World,” Muresanu takes audiences on a global musical journey, beginning in Europe with the lively folk influences of Romanian, Russian, and Irish composers (Enescu, Shchedrin, Flynn).
The unmistakable charm of Vienna shines through in Kreisler’s works, alongside two towering solo violin masterpieces—Paganini’s dazzling Caprice No. 24 and Bach’s deeply expressive Ciaccona, both audience favorites.
The exploration continues with composers inspired by Persian (Reza Vali), Chinese (Bright Sheng), and Indian (Shirish Korde) musical traditions, each using unique modal systems to create striking soundscapes. In this segment, the violin channels its ancestral roots, evoking instruments like the Arab rebab and the Chinese erhu.
A brief stop in South America features an Astor Piazzolla Tango Étude, before returning to North America with pieces rooted in Native American and bluegrass traditions (Jerod 'Impichchaachaaha' Tate and Mark O'Connor). Two works commissioned specifically for Four Strings Around the World introduce fresh musical perspectives: Tate’s Oshta, inspired by a Native American hymn, and Korde’s Vák, structured around the Lalit Raga.
