Ximalaza (2018) a documentary film by Peng Yong (run time 40 minutes)
Ximalaza chronicles a joint American-Chinese team’s efforts to save a Tibetan farm house from a dam on the headwaters of the Mekong River in Yunnan Province, China, by disassembling the house and moving it to a new site along the Shenandoah River in Jefferson County, West Virginia. Over three weeks in June and July, 2017, documentarian Peng Yong filmed the history of the house, its place and community, and the dramatic story of how it was taken apart and shipped to the U.S. The project team in the film includes Loudon County luthier Marty Fair, along with a group from Sidwell Friends School in Washington, DC, led by John Flower, working with the Chinese team leader Yang Wendou and carpenters Zhao, Zhou, Shi, and Yang. In June and July, 2019, the house will be rebuilt as the China Folk House Retreat at the Friends Wilderness Center in Jefferson County, completing part II of the film: a house-raising to which you are all invited!
A panel discussion with the project leaders John Flower, Marty Fair, and Yang Wendou follows the film.
About the filmmaker: Peng Yong is from rural Sichuan Province. He received his graduate degree in film making from Communications University in Beijing in 2017. Ximalaza is his first documentary feature. Mr. Peng currently lives and works in Beijing.
