What’s Going On?- Artist Talk with Nancy Polo
September 24 @ 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM$10.00
What do a school bus and a sea monster have in common? What would you say if an artist answered COVID? Nancy Polo’s show “What’s Going On?” (September 1-30, 2021) is the artist’s attempt to make sense of Corona 19. There’s a long history of artists employing their work to record and process global health events. Art related to plagues date to the first century. The Antonine or Galen plague took place across the Ancient Roman Empire, and may have struck in Eastern Han China. It’s estimated to have killed five million people. The physician for whom the plague was named, Galen of Pergamon, was a pioneer of medicine. His image did not appear until the early 6th-century in a group portrait in an illuminated manuscript.
Art related to plagues was often made many years after the threat of the disease receded. We don’t have that luxury today. Response to the quarantine has varied. To fully comprehend the isolation, anxiety and fear related to COVID, it can be helpful to look at works of art. “The Danger Within” was painted by Polo a month after quarantine began. The idea for this painting came from a desire to understand how Corona 19 compared to other historic pandemics, in particular the plagues that came to Europe in the 14th and 17th centuries. Four versions of the artist sit across from each other, playing a game of poker under a chandelier that is modeled on a microscopic image of the pathogen.
Come to a talk with the artist Nancy Polo in a closing reception on September 24 to understand how her creative expression in watercolor was her art therapy for COVID. The artist will explore the major themes in her collection of paintings. There will be time to ask questions after a 40-minute presentation.
