Join us for a very special evening of music by Furnace Mountain and artwork by Julie Miles and Tia Maggio. Look, listen, mix and mingle!
Furnace Mountain, named for a mountain near where all the members grew up, consists of some of the most innovative and gifted young musicians in Virginia.
With Aimee Curl on bass and vocals, Danny Knicely on mandolin and fiddle, Dave Van Deventer on fiddle, and Morgan Morrison on guitar, bouzouki, and vocals, the band creates music that is at times lively and raucous, with spirited fiddle melodies weaving in and around the powerful rhythms of the bass and bouzouki, and other times poignant and poetic, with sublime vocal harmonies beautifully interpreting some of the oldest songs ever written.
Furnace Mountain has performed throughout the world, from the Yangtze River in China to the banks of the Shenandoah River, where they are the host band of Watermelon Park Festival, held on the site of one of the very first bluegrass festivals, in 1965. Furnace Mountain plays music from the American Appalachian traditions, as well as original compositions, and songs penned by their favorite song writing friends.
About Tia Maggio
A native New Yorker, Tia Maggio, was formally trained in graphic design and advertising at Pratt Institute, she went on to the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, to study fine art and art history. Even before then, this pastel artist was immersed in the world of art. Her mother, Patricia, attended the Rhode Island School of design and was a painter and her father, Joseph, “a weekend watercolorist” had his own interior design firm in New York and London. After college, Tia was the director of sales at her father’s firm, during that time she opened and managed their corporate office in London. Later she partnered with her friend Sonja, another Pratt graduate, to form Sontina Graphic Design, where their mainstay was designing company logos.
When children came along, Tia left the corporate world and turned to watercolors and from there to pastels. After advertising she enjoyed the looseness –freedom- of fine art.
About Julie Miles
Julie founded J Miles Studios in Washington DC, 1991, a full spectrum decorative and fine arts studio. Miles is dedicated to the tactile artistry and craftsmanship in creating visuals.
A native Virginian, Miles graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University. Pursuing a career in faux, mural and trompe l’oeil painting, she worked extensively with painting masters from Europe and the United States. Her work is featured in several embassies, hotels, restaurants, residences and numerous publications as Traditional Home, The Piedmont Virginian, Washington Post and on the cover of “The House That Faux Built.”
The last few years Miles has been able to split time between the scaffold and the studio. Her paintings are explorations in texture, tension, close observation and interpretation to the surrounding natural world.
