Intro to Oil Painting with Jordan Xu
May 1, 2021 @ 10:00 AM - May 2, 2021 @ 4:00 PM

Saturday, May 1st and Sunday, May 2
10 AM to 4 PM both days
Oil is by far the most popular painting medium in the history of fine art, with many iconic masterpieces like Van Gogh’s Starry Night and Rembrandt’s self-portrait all created using oil. However, with its unique properties, oil can sometimes be a challenging medium to learn. This is a two-day workshop designed to give beginners a structured, repeatable process to painting in oil.
In this workshop, you will learn the basic information about oil painting, from the paint and brushes to all the other materials you will need. Then we will explore the fun stuff, a step-by-step approach that will produce a realistic, yet painterly (un-photo-like) image that we all love, such as John Singer Sargent’s heartbreakingly beautiful portrait of Lady Agnew (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lady_Agnew_of_Lochnaw). You will also learn important techniques to manipulate oil paint on the canvas, as well as some painting theories. Short demos will be given on each step of the painting process.
We will be covering a lot of information in a one day so it is important that you come prepared with canvas(es) and brushes. Paint, solvent, paper towels and easels will be provided. We will start promptly at 10am, break for lunch at noon and restart at 1pm and paint till 4pm.
NOTE: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we will be required to wear a mask and keep a 6-foot distance from one another at all times while inside the building.
