This show is part of our 2024 Classical Music Series!

About: Fuse Ensemble is a unique electroacoustic chamber ensemble. Each season an innovative concept gives voice to new music composers and creates musical happenings with visual elements of live or interactive video, electronics, or kinetic installations. They joyfully collaborate with sculptors, visual artists, instrument makers, poets; with analog and digital artists of all types.

Champions of new music since they first came together in 2008, Fuse Ensemble performs works of living composers, including Nicole Mitchell, Steve Antosca, Caroline Shaw, Eve Beglarian, Jeffrey Mumford, Sophia Jani, and many more, with an upcoming season that includes works by Judith Shatin, Brittany J. Green, and Pamela Z. They have premiered numerous original films and live interactive videos by Chilean Artist Edgar Endress, the AlsoSisters, animator Michael J. Edwards, and live interactive videos by Adam Kendall; installations by Howard Connelly, Norbert Attard and Workingman Collective and others.

Fuse Ensemble Director Gina Biver is a signatory of New Music Equity Action, a group of composers, performers, and directors committed to dismantling the inequitable status quo in new music. As of 2022, Fuse Ensemble is supported by Fuse Ensemble Arts Collective, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to advance the awareness of, and opportunities for, composers and artists in underrepresented groups. Fuse Ensemble aims to expose audiences to a wide range of artistic perspectives and insights while encouraging the growth of a more just, inclusive, and vibrant new music community.

About the Program: Fuse Ensemble’s Speech and Silence concert season brings to the fore two ways of listening. In an alternating series of live music works (many with spoken word) and the original silent videos of artist Edgar Endress, the ensemble gathers for successive moments in these two realms and explores the deep possibilities that lie within and outside of our auditory sphere.

It has been said that where speech may divide us, in silence, we are connected – not only to each other, but to our deeper selves, and to the present moment. The audience contemplates this visual world in front of them, a silent, direct experience of the mind as it is; until their listening is reawakened, drawn outwards by each live music piece that follows.
