World of Wood Exhibition Closing

  • Barns of Rose Hill 95 Chalmers Court Berryville, VA, 22611 United States (map)

About the Program: Join us for an engaging two-part program that blends history, craftsmanship, and sustainability, featuring two engaging presentations from experts in woodworking, conservation, and furniture-making at the highest level.

For the first part of the program, we welcome Larry Gochenour and Joe Lehnen, two key figures in Virginia’s Urban Wood Program, for an insightful discussion on sustainability, conservation, and the creative repurposing of trees that would otherwise go to waste. Larry Gochenour, owner of Gochenour Sawmill Company, has been at the forefront of efforts to give unwanted trees a second life, reducing waste while benefiting local economies and artisans alike. Joe Lehnen, a Forest Utilization & Marketing Specialist, works to expand the reach of urban wood by promoting its use in woodworking, construction, and beyond. Together, they bring a wealth of knowledge about sustainable forestry and the untapped potential of salvaged wood.

Through their work, discarded wood is transformed into valuable resources, benefiting artisans, businesses, and communities while promoting environmental stewardship. They will share their expertise on the environmental and economic impact of urban wood utilization, followed by a discussion on how individuals, businesses, and communities can get involved.

Following this discussion, master craftsmen Jeff Headley and Steve Hamilton will take us on a journey through their 44 years of experience working with some of the most historically significant furniture in the nation. Having created and restored pieces for the White House—including furnishings in the Oval Office—Colonial Williamsburg, Mount Vernon, West Point, and the National Park Service, their expertise has left a lasting mark on America’s most treasured institutions. Jeff and Steve will present a stunning slideshow showcasing the meticulous artistry behind their work, from custom furniture commissions to historical restorations. They will also share personal stories from decades of collaboration with First Ladies, curators, and historians, offering a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the legacy of fine furniture-making in the United States.

Whether you are passionate about sustainability, woodworking, or history, or simply appreciate masterful craftsmanship, this free public event offers a unique opportunity to learn, be inspired, and engage in conversation. Join us for an exploration of the enduring beauty and impact of wood—both in preserving the past and shaping the future—while connecting with experts and fellow enthusiasts who share a passion for sustainable solutions.
