Irish Traditional Music Workshops with Master Fiddler and Legendary Irish Musician Brendan Mulvihill
Brendan Mulvihill will lead two sets of Irish music workshops open to all melody instruments. The workshops are for musicians interested in building and refining their Irish traditional music repertoire.
Brendan will lead a set of four workshops for intermediate players and four workshops for advanced players. The workshops for each level are designed to be taken as a set of four so that participants can develop a solid base for the new tunes and skills that Brendan shares and allow participants to return to the same group to play the tune(s) learned in a prior workshop. The workshop schedule allows two weeks for workshops participants to practice what they learn in the workshop before returning for another workshop.
Intermediate level workshops from 4:30 to 5:30: June 21, July 5 and 19, August 2.
Advanced level workshops from 4:30 to 5:30: June 28, July 12 and 26, August 9
Cost: $125 for the series of 4 workshops.
Workshops are taught by ear; participants may bring recording devices but are expected to attempt to learn during the workshop. Recordings can be used for learning between workshops.
Intermediate musicians should have some comfort learning by ear and be very familiar with and comfortable playing their instrument. They may be new to Irish music.
Advanced musicians should have no problems learning by ear and should be very familiar with and competent playing their instrument. They may be new to Irish music. Advanced players already familiar with Irish music and that already play Irish music are welcome and will find learning from Brendan a valuable experience. Brendan will select tunes that no one in the group already knows so that all will be learning a new tune.
About Brendan: Master fiddler and legendary Irish musician, Brendan Mulvihill learned music from masters of Irish music that he met throughout his life, starting with his own father National Heritage Fellow, Martin Mulvihill of County Limerick. Brendan, an All-Ireland Fiddler, is an internationally known Irish musician, teaching Irish music and leading sessions in the Washington DC area for decades. Brendan has been called “a national treasure, “ “a rare genius,” and is often referred to as “the professor” for his knowledge of the name and source of tunes. In his fiddle playing, Brendan’s strong tone, remarkable bow work and unsurpassed musicianship come from a deep love of the music and from a surprising influence. Though inspired by many traditional Irish musicians, Brendan also developed a passion for classical music. In addition to playing in numerous venues throughout his life, Brendan has been honored with several awards recognizing him for his contributions to the Irish culture. More than a few Irish fiddlers and musicians currently touring, recording, or performing in bands across the country and some in Ireland have learned tunes or studied with Brendan Mulvihill. Although he has recordings from his early music career, his recent work is intended to share music with those interested in learning more about the music. He published “The Irish Scroll,” a tune book with a CD, in 2013 sharing the first volume of Irish
tunes, some rare, some with his own variations, and all worth learning. In 2018, he released a solo CD that demonstrates his variations and his beautiful playing style.
